SWEET BAY MAGNOLIA
Native to the east coast and the southeast, Sweet Bay Magnolia perfoms well in our midwest climate. Glossy, leathery, deep green leaves turn bronze-yellow in the fall, and can be semi-evergreen during mild winters. Creamy white flowers bloom in early summer, and have a strong, lemony fragrance. Flowers develop into cones with bright red seeds. Unlike other magnolias, Sweet bay can tolerate wet soils. An excellent tree for near a patio, it benefits from some protection.
