CANADIAN WILD GINGER
Description
Wild Ginger is native to forests and woodlands in Illinois. Heart-shaped leaves are velvety and deep green, and make a dense groundcover for moist to wet, shaded areas over time. Unlike European Wild Ginger, our native one is not evergreen. Unique burgundy-red flowers bloom at the base of the leaves in the spring. Wild Ginger makes a great companion plant with native ferns, Virginia Bluebells, and other woodland wildflowers. The roots of this ginger have the same fragrance as culinary ginger.
