AMERICAN FILBERT
Description
American Filbert or Hazelnut is a tough and adaptable shrub that is native to northern Illinois. Male catkins bloom in early spring before the leaves emerge. Tiny female flowers are deep wine-red. Female flowers develop into clusters of edible hazelnuts in August, and are a valuable food source for wildlife. Medium green leaves turn attractive shades of red, orange, and yellow in the fall. This is a great shrub to use as an informal hedge or screen, or to give a naturalized look to the landscape.
