JEFFERSON ELM
Description
Chosen for its excellent Dutch Elm disease resistance, the original Jefferson Elm was planted on the National Mall in Washington DC in the 1930’s and still survives today. Mature trees develop an expansive crown of dark green leaves. In early spring, insignificant, small green flowers give way to rounded, single-seeded, sterile samaras before leaves finally emerge. This tree is adaptable to a wide variety of soil conditions and pH. A great street tree as it is tolerant of deicing salts and air pollution.
