How to Get Ahead of Lawn Weeds This Spring

Early Spring Weed Strategy

Garden Weeds
A Practical Early-Spring Lawn Strategy for Chicagoland (Zone 6a)

As soon as the snow melts and lawns begin to wake up, many homeowners start thinking about one thing: weeds. Dandelions, crabgrass, creeping Charlie… they seem to appear overnight. But the truth is, the best time to control weeds isn’t when you see them. It’s before they emerge.

Early spring offers a small but powerful window to prevent many common lawn weeds before they ever take hold.

Let’s break it down.

What Is a Weed, Really?

A weed is simply a plant growing where it’s not wanted. Many common lawn weeds in Illinois are broadleaf species or annual grassy weeds. The most frustrating ones, like crabgrass, are annual weeds. They grow from seed each year. If you prevent the seed from germinating, you stop the problem before it starts.

That’s where timing matters.

Understanding Pre-Emergent Weed Control

Pre-emergent herbicides work by preventing weed seeds from successfully germinating. They do not kill existing weeds. Instead, they create a barrier at the soil surface that disrupts root development during germination.

In Chicagoland (USDA Zone 6a), pre-emergent products are typically applied:

  • Late March through early April
  • When soil temperatures consistently reach about 50–55°F

This temperature range often coincides with the blooming of forsythia (a traditional natural indicator gardeners have used for decades).

Applying too early reduces effectiveness. Applying too late allows weeds to establish.

If you’re unsure about timing, our team can help guide you based on current soil conditions.

Lawn Health Is Your First Defense

Prevention doesn’t stop with herbicides.

A thick, healthy lawn is naturally resistant to weeds because dense turf shades the soil and reduces space for seeds to establish.

Simple practices make a difference:

  • Mow at a slightly higher setting (around 3 inches for most cool-season grasses)
  • Overseed bare or thin patches
  • Improve soil health through aeration and proper fertilization
  • Avoid overwatering, which encourages shallow roots

Weeds thrive in stressed lawns. Strengthen the turf, and you reduce their opportunity.

Common Early-Season Weeds

Knowing what you’re targeting helps you choose the right approach.

CrabgrassCrabgrass

An annual grassy weed that germinates in spring and thrives in summer heat. Best controlled with pre-emergent products.

DandelionDandelions

A perennial broadleaf weed with a deep taproot. Best addressed with post-emergent control or hand removal before seed heads form.

Creeping CharlieCreeping Charlie

A low-growing perennial from the mint family. It spreads aggressively and often requires targeted broadleaf control.

Broadleaf PlantainPlantain

A broadleaf perennial that appears in compacted soils.

Hand Pulling vs. Chemical Control

If your lawn has only a few scattered weeds, hand pulling can be effective, especially before seed production.

However, for recurring issues or larger infestations, selective herbicides may be necessary. Always follow label directions carefully, and apply products when conditions are appropriate.

A Note About Garden Beds

Pre-emergent products designed for lawns should not be used in garden beds unless specifically labeled for that purpose.

In landscape beds, prevention strategies include:

  • Applying mulch 2–3 inches deep to suppress weed growth
  • Hand removal before flowering
  • Maintaining healthy plant spacing to shade soil

Healthy, well-planted beds naturally reduce weed pressure over time.

March Is the Window

The biggest mistake homeowners make is waiting until weeds are visible. By then, germination has already occurred. Late winter and early spring may not feel urgent, but this is when you set the tone for your entire lawn season. A little proactive care now means fewer problems in June and July.
