Spring Garden

As the days grow longer and the weather warms up, it’s time to get your garden ready for a fresh start. At Hinsdale Nurseries, we’re excited to help you embrace the beauty of spring with a to-do checklist designed to make your outdoor spaces thrive. Whether you’re planning a lush flower bed, a vegetable garden, or a custom container arrangement, our 175 years of gardening expertise are here to guide you every step of the way. Let’s get started on making your garden dreams come true!

1. Clean Up Your Garden Beds

Remove dead plants, leaves, and debris to make room for new growth. This will help prevent pests and disease while giving your plants a fresh start. Not sure you want to do the work? Call our maintenance team and let us help.

*Don’t do this too soon if there is still snow fall and freezing temperatures.

2. Prepare Your Soil

When the ground unfreezes, after winter, add compost or organic matter to enrich the soil and improve drainage.

Healthy soil is the foundation for a thriving garden.

3. Plan Your Planting

Make a list of plants you’d like to grow this season. Think about what perennials and shrubs might work in your landscape based on their needs and your conditions. Consider incorporating seasonal flowers, vegetables, and herbs. Planning ahead ensures a balanced and beautiful garden.

4. Check Your Tools

Make sure your gardening tools are clean, sharp, and ready for use. This will save time and effort during planting and maintenance.

5. Trim Perennials and Shrubs

Two weeks after the last frost, cut back any dead growth on perennials and shrubs to encourage new blooms and healthy growth. Make sure to prune in early spring before new growth begins.

6. Apply Mulch

When it’s time, add a layer of mulch around plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Mulching also gives your garden a polished, tidy look.

7. Create a Seasonal Garden Plan

Design your garden layout with an eye toward the seasons. Choose plants with different blooming times to ensure color and interest throughout the year.

8. Get Creative with Containers

Don’t forget about container gardening! Brainstorm and sketch out potted arrangements with seasonal flowers or herbs. When it’s time to plant, containers will add vibrant color to your patio, porch, or balcony. And—if you want us to do the work, our team will happily create a masterpiece that fits your home and personality.
