Every season, we see the same thing: someone chooses a few plants they love, places them in a container, and something feels… off.
The plants are beautiful on their own, but together, the arrangement lacks structure.
That’s where the thriller, filler, spiller method comes in! It’s a simple design formula that creates balance, movement, and visual interest. Once you learn it, you’ll use it every year.
Start with the Thriller
The thriller is your focal point. This is the tallest plant in your container, the one that immediately draws the eye and sets the tone for everything around it. It creates height, drama, and structure.
Depending on your style, this could be something bold and architectural or soft and natural.
Common thriller choices:
- Upright ornamental grasses
- Canna lilies
- Dracaena spikes
- Cordyline
Placed in the center or slightly off-center, the thriller anchors the entire design.
Add the Filler
Next comes the filler, the plants that bring fullness, color, and texture to the middle of the container.
Fillers soften the transition between the thriller and the edge of the pot. They create volume and help the container feel lush and complete.
Popular filler plants:
- Geraniums
- Lantana
- Impatiens
- Coleus
- Calibrachoa
You can choose colors that complement your thriller, or create contrast for a more dynamic look.
Finish with the Spiller
The spiller is what brings everything together.
These trailing plants cascade over the edge of the container, softening the lines and adding movement. It’s the detail that makes a container feel finished.
Great spiller options:
- Creeping Jenny
- Vinca Vine
- Trailing verbena
- Alyssum
Spillers create that natural, effortless look, even though the design is anything but accidental.
A Few Tips for Success
A well-designed container is only part of the equation. How you plant and care for it matters just as much.
- Choose a larger container than you think you need. More soil means better moisture retention and healthier roots.
- Use a quality potting mix and add slow-release fertilizer at planting. This keeps your container performing all season long.
- Match plant needs. Make sure everything in your container has similar sun and water requirements.
- Water based on conditions, not a schedule. Check the top inch of soil— if it’s dry, it’s time to water.
Designed for Your Space
The thriller, filler, spiller method is a great starting point, but the best containers are tailored to the space they live in… your light conditions, your home, and your personal style.
