CHESTNUT OAK
Description
Native to southern Illinois but hardy through the northern part of the state, this oak belongs to the white oak group. Leaves are leathery, smooth and green with wavy margins and undersides being lighter green and slightly hairy along the veins. Fall color varies from red to orange to yellow-brown. Acorns can be up to 1.5″ long. Young bark is smooth and dark reddish-brown. Mature grey bark is deeply fissured producing broad ridges. Broad, open crown in maturity. Prefers slightly acidic soils.
